O teremim é um dos primeiros instrumentos musicais completamente eletrônicos. Inventado em 1919 pelo russo Lev Sergeivitch Termen (conhecido também pela forma francesa do nome: Léon Theremin), o teremim é único por não precisar de nenhum contato físico para produzir música e foi, de fato, o primeiro instrumento musical projetado para ser tocado sem precisar de contato, pois é executado movimentando-se as mãos no ar. Apresentado pelo próprio inventor em 1920, o instrumento opera através do princípio da produção de efeito heteródino em dois osciladores de frequência radiofônicos e consiste de caixa com duas antenas externas, uma que controla a altura, e outra, o volume, ao redor das quais o músico movimenta suas mãos para produzir som. O teremim também tem versões com teclado e com espelho, como o dos instrumentos de corda.

Elliott Carter discusses the 100th birthday celebration concert on 11 Decemeber at Southbank Centre, with Marshall Marcus. The concert features his solo piano piece Catenaires and his glittering piano concerto Diaolgues. As part of the Shell Classic International series, Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and conductor Pierre Boulez pay tribute to Carter with one of the leaders in contemporary classical music, Ensemble Intercontemporain.

Elliott Cook Carter, Jr. (Nova Iorque em 11 de dezembro, 1908) é um compositor americano. Desenvolveu um interesse pela música ainda adolescente e foi incentivado pelo compositor Charles Ives (que vendia o seguro para a sua família). Carter se formou em Inglês na Universidade de Harvard, e estudou música na Longy School of Music que fica próxima à Universidade. Foi aluno de Walter Piston e Gustav Holst. Fez mestrado em música em Harvard finalizado em 1932. Ele então foi para Paris para estudar com Nadia Boulanger (assim como muitos outros compositores americanos). Carter trabalhou com Mlle Boulanger 1932-35 e em 1935 ele recebeu um doutorado em Música (Mus D) da École Normale, em Paris.

Guillaume de Machaut (1300 - 1377) § Messe de Notre Dame

A French classical composer, important in the development of polyphonic music. His works include La Messe De Notre Dame, one of the earliest masses, probably composed in 1364, several motets and many songs.

Machaut was born around 1300 in the Champagne region of France. He had a clerical education and took holy orders. In 1323 he joined the royal household of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and served as secretary in the the king's retinue. He traveled with King John's court, but increasingly spent his time composing rather than in administration, becoming widely respected as a poet and a composer. His first verified composition was a motet written in 1324 for the election of the Archbishop of Rheims. Through the efforts of King John, Machaut was granted several benefices, in particular the canonry of the new Gothic cathedral in Rheims, which was granted in 1337, eventually taking up residency there in 1340. He left his formal work with the king, though remaining in service until the monarch's death at the battle of Crecy in 1346. Machaut had accompanied the king on several military campaigns, including the disastrous battle of Crecy where the king fulfilled his chivalric destiny by charging into the fray, even though he was blind. After the outbreak of the Black Death in France at the end of the 1340's, Machaut prepared eleborate collections of his compositions for his patrons, who included John, Duke of Berry, and the future King Charles V of France. These unique, beautifully illuminated manuscript editions combined motets, ballads, and many other forms with a wide selection of his poetry.
